The 4 C's of Diamond

CUT

Cut includes a diamond's proportions and finish. A well-cut diamond captures the light around it and makes the light perform in breathtaking ways. Cut also refers to shape. Diamond shapes include rounds and fancy cuts such as emerald cuts, pears, and marquises.

A skilled cutter can maximize the weight yield from a piece of rough and balance that with making the most of the stone's optical efficiency- the way it handles light for maximum brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Damas uses the most skilled and experienced diamond cutters in the world to bring out the stone's brilliance. We have various cuts that are universally popular.

CLARITY

Clarity is the relative absence of clarity characteristics - which are inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions are enclosed in a diamond or they are on the surface. Blemishes are confined to the surface of a polished diamond. Inclusions normally have more impact on a diamond's beauty and value than blemishes. Diamonds without clarity characteristics are extremely rare, which makes them extremely valuable.

At Damas we carefully examine the five factors that determine the overall effect of characteristics on a clarity grade. The five factors are size, number, position, nature and relief of inclusions visible under the scrutiny of a 10X magnifying loupe or microscope. We have a quality control department where each stone is scrutinized under magnification. We reject thousands of diamonds every year in order to ensure that we delight our valued customers with beautiful pieces.

COLOUR

Color relates to the amount of body color in a diamond. Truly colorless diamonds are extremely rare and valuable. Most diamonds used in jewelry are near-colorless, with at least some trace of yellow and brown. Diamonds also come in deeper shades of yellow and brown, as well as in a variety of other colors. These make up the category of fancy-colored diamonds. With near-colorless diamonds, less color means higher value. With fancy-colored diamonds, more color usually means higher value.

Diamonds that ranges from colorless to light yellow and light brown fall within the D-to-Z range. A diamond's color grade is based on how noticeable the color is, also known as depth of color. The GIA Color Scale can be divided into colorless, near-colorless, faint yellow, very light yellow, and light-yellow ranges. At Damas, diamonds are color graded as per internationally acclaimed laboratory standards.

CARAT

Carat is the term used to describe the weight of any gemstone, including diamonds. Diamonds are weighed in metric carats or "ct" (versus the karat-amount of gold contained in an item). 1 ounce= 255.51 cts 1 ounce= 31.102 grams 1 gram= 5 carats. Since 1913, the international standard has been 1 carat = 200 milligrams, or 1/5 of a gram. In jewellery pieces with more than one diamond, the carats may be described in terms of total carat weight. This number is the combined total weight of all stones in the piece.

CARING FOR DIAMONDS

Diamonds must be kept clean and be stored carefully when they are not being worn. Here are some guidelines to help keep diamonds in top condition:

  • Avoid wearing diamond jewellery while doing any kind of rough work. Even though a diamond is extremely durable, a hard blow could chip it.
  • While doing household chores, never allow jewellery to get into contact with chlorine bleach.
  • If there is a loose stone setting, stones moving, or any other noticeable damage to jewellery, one should not wear the jewellery until it is repaired.
  • When diamonds are not worn they should be stored in a fabric-lined case or in a box with dividers or separate compartments--diamonds can scratch other jewellery as well as each other.
